Grammy Awards 2013 - Get Rihannas Red Dress Look

Thank heavens the 2013 Grammys came with a requirement to wear actual clothes this year. I actually chuckled when I heard organisers had to send out a note explaining to guests that they should cover their privates & basically arrive looking respectable. I for one certainly am grateful because it's given us one of the best looks I have seen on Rihanna to date!

What a divine shade of red her Azzedine Alaia silk chiffon gown was with it's sheer panels. Sure she could have added some nipple pasties but I won't push my luck - I love this look and I'm sure in the next few months we'll see red gowns doing the rounds... haha yes I'm rhyming ;) Rihanna kept that red theme going strong with matching nails, lips and heels creating this perfectly pretty look.

If you simply can't wait for the mass reproductions of this gown and you need it now! Alex Perry has one he prepared earlier and it's currently on sale.  His beautiful Romana gown can be found at David Jones. It has the same full skirt detail as Rihannas gown, comes in a "to die for" red and has an intricate bust detail. Alternatively you can hire the dress at Glamcorner.com.au

We'll be sure to bring you a more detailed "red dress" blog shortly ;)

Enjoy,

All That Glitters - Precious Metals Trend

The past few weeks have seen a number of beauties hit the red carpet in precious metals. Gold has had a strong showing on runways throughout the year and continues to be a favorite with silver, bronze and even copper making an appearance.

Heading into the Christmas party season I am loving the idea of wrapping myself up in precious metals!

Elisha Cuthbert cut a fine figure in this Editions by Georges Chakra Spring 2011 gold sequin column dress. The color against her skin makes her positively glow. I love the simplicity of the hair and accessories. The beauty of precious metals is "less is more"!

Kate Moss stepped our draped in gold in this Marc Jacobs evening gown for her book launch. The dress has an old Hollywood vibe about it and I love the dark gold tone...now I just wish Kate and done something different with her hair and skipped that necklace!

Taylor Swift  looked divine in a Zuhair Murad Pre-Fall 2012 long-sleeve mini dress with gold accessories. A wonderful alternative to wearing a full gold gown, look for beading / embroidered detail in the color du jour.

Pink hit the AMA's red carpet in a beautiful Catherine Deane creation with bronze laser cut leather bodice. A wonderful alternative to gold bronze is a flattering color to many skin tones.

Karolina Kurkova recently stepped out draped in a silver Nicholas Oakwell Couture gown. She kept her look very tonal with all silver accessories adding a pop of color with her lipstick. This look may be overpowering on some but I found it very regal on Karolina.

Naomie Harris recently wore a spectacular Nicholas Oakwell Fall 2012 Couture mini dress combining black chiffon with copper embellishment...yes copper! She accessorized with a gold belt. Now this is how you mix your precious metals!

There is definitely something for everyone in the precious metal stakes. Find the color that suits you best and keep the rest of your styling simple for an elegant, eye catching look. Here are some of our top picks for getting in on the precious metal style yourself! Enjoy! Ronelle @ GoS xox

Kristen Stewart Zuhair Murad Black Lace Jumpsuit Vs Nude Dress Twighlight Saga Premiere

Today Kristen Stewart stole everyones attention on the red carpet yet again in another Zuhair Murad creation. This time Kristen threw aside her super sexy glam look for something a little more rock and roll meets cabaret in a heavily beaded lace jumpsuit with cut out details. She styled the jumpsuit with tousled locks that gave it a modern edge.

On first look I thought it was a dress, a busy design but I didn't dislike it but on realizing it was a jumpsuit ... can't say I'm loving it that much. Then again I've never been a fan of lace jumpsuits. This one is particularly jarring to me as the design seems to draw the eye to all the most unfortunate places... cough.... I do like her hair and make up though. Her eyes look spectacular!

Which look do you prefer? Or do you think two sheer looks in a row is too much?

Kristen Stewart Zuhair Murad Nude Dress Twilight Saga Premiere

I'm not a Twilight fan but having seen the red carpet for the UK premiere yesterday I was astounded by how pretty Kristen Stewart looked. For me her hair and makeup was perfection and I was madly in love with the nude / champagne color of her Zuhair Murad strapless evening gown.

HOWEVER I do wish she had gone with the original design that appears to have more fabric and panels. There is quite alot of bending, reaching and stretching that goes on on the red carpet of a premiere and you can be sure that all those awkward moments will be snapped. Having said that it did strike me that the dress was a very strategic move as the rest of the cast opted for pretty and safe looks. Do you think there is just a little too much "nude" in this look or are you loving it?

MTV Europe 2012 Fashion Fails

It's been a while since I've done a Fashion Fail Friday but yesterdays MTV Europe Awards red carpet left me so disturbed I simply could not wait for Friday.

I always expect a little OTT at MTV awards, even more so when it's in Europe but there is quirky and OTT then there is just plain wrong.....

One of my least favorite looks of the night was Heidi Klum. I've seen this dress and those shoes on the runway and even then it was a questionable design choice. It saddens me that Versace is pulling out yea olde designs :( Why Heidi...why???

Coming in a very close second was Rita Ora in Marchesa. In a case of good dresses going bad the problem was not the dress, it was the wearer. Rita gets away with her overly yellow hair with dark roots on most days but it ruins and cheapens an otherwise regal dress.

Kim Kardashian, although not the worst dressed did look like she had tacked on a tail of black plastic bags in a Stephanie Rolland creation reminiscent of Ursula the sea witch. Perhaps we should give her a thumbs up for recycling?

Finally Lana Del Ray has left me somewhat confused. I quite like her midnight blue satin crossover dress but it seems out of place on an MTV red carpet. The bouffant beehive channeling Priscilla Presley back in the days of her marriage to Elvis makes me think Lana has not quite got over Halloween.

Baroque Trend - Translating Runway Style To Everyday

My favorite bloggers have already explored the beauty and decadence of the Baroque trend in the past few weeks. As most of the world heads into the cooler months it is quite fitting that this should be a Fall 2013 trend but I'm in love and can't wait to swaddle myself in some of the trends luxurious elements even though we're heading into the Australian Summer. So here are some ideas on how we can capitalize on the look and get an extra season out of the trend ;)

Dolce & Gabbana gave us an army of beauties lavishly decorated in black and gold. Look for details such as embroidery, lace, sheer panels, applique and anything ornate. For jewelry stick to gold and regal gemstones.

This Golden Garden Dress available at Modcloth embodies the trend perfectly with it's gold embroidered overlay. Coming in at a teeny tiny $74.99 it's perfect for a wedding or that office cocktail party over the holiday season. Come Fall 2013 layer it up with a luxurious velvet blazer and opaque stockings. A few dollars well spent!

If black and gold is too strong a statement for you or you feel the color scheme is too heavy for Spring / Summer D&G gave us the option of luxurious fabrics such as heavy laces and pretty and rose prints that can be worn through Fall and into the warmer months.

Every lady simply MUST have a lace dress in her wardrobe! There is something about a cream or white lace piece that screams luxury and I personally find the color allows the detail of the lace itself to take center stage. This Anna Sui lace dress is an investment piece in it's classic color and styling. Even with it's long sleeves it's still a great pick for the cooler Spring evenings here in Melbourne and will easily see you through into Winter. Pair it with striking gold accessories for an opulent look.

Take a light and fresh approach to Baroque with this little strapless rose pattern dress from Asos. Another example of how this trend can be cross seasonal. This piece would be perfect on date night or pair with a light cardi and pointed toe pumps for a special Christmas lunch. But wait...throw on some sky high strappys and a striking red lip and you're ready to party into the New Year. At $114 it's a great alternative to the little black dress ;)

I can't wait to get my Baroque on! Will you be wearing this trend through the warmer months as well?

Enjoy!

Melbourne Cup 2012 Fashion Hits & Misses

Seeing as my last post was some ideas for what's hot for the Cup it seems only fitting that I should share a few looks from the race that stops a nation.

Melbourne Cup tends to be a little more out there so you always expect to see a little crazy in peoples looks. However there is something to be said for genius crazy that works...and that other kind of crazy that leaves you scratching your head!

From L-R Jesinta Campbell gave off that "scratch your head crazy" vibe in an unusual off centre turban head piece that simply does not work with her pretty white lace dress with peplum waist detail. I'm not loving the choice of shoes and handbag here either.

Kyly Clarke was one of my favorites in her orange and black ensemble. I love the color and simplicity, it's bold yet elegant.

Jennifer Hawkins was another one that left me feeling uneasy. As an ambassador for Myer I always have high expectations of the beauty but I feel this lilac and black look is all too busy and I don't understand the Bollywood hair accessory with this look.

Another look that was just a little too crazy for me was Delta Goodrem. Delta is a real beauty and I love her red carpet style because it's generally not too fussy. Something went horribly wrong on this occasion :( As much as we all love the flower crown it is just not a look for everyone. Paired with the tulle skirt / brocade bodice dress it's all wrong. Perhaps Delta didn't get the memo that it is Spring and that a Dior Fall gown would not fit the bill. Don't get me started on that odd choice of shoes. Apparently due to an injury flats were her only choice but did she have to choose those??

The other standout in the style stakes for me was Kate Waterhouse. I adore her lilac Gucci shift with Spring bloom detail around the neck. Her lilac veil is an interesting choice as it covers her whole face but seems fitting for a day that requires you to be a little eccentric. I love her ankle strap sandals with this look but I wish she'd opted for a color that picked up on the neckline of this dress, perhaps white / violet or gold.

I guess it just goes to show, it's all in the details. One great piece does not make a great outfit so style wisely!

5 Must Have Shoes For Summer Holiday Season

With the holiday season fast approaching it seems my dollars are spent before they make it into my purse so it's time to start thinking smart. Here are five absolute MUST HAVE shoes that will cover you for every occasion over the summer and holiday season....and then some!!

 TWO STRAP SANDAL

Whether you call this the two strap sandal or the ankle strap sandal it doesn't matter. What does matter is that you get a pair!! The barely there style will take you from day to evening in the blink of an eye. It is super sexy, comes in a range of heights and colors and is super easy to style.

 WEDGE HEELS

Always a must have for summer the wedge can be worn from a pool side party to a cocktail bar or even shopping with the girls. We recently showed you how to style with wedges for a dressy casual event. Look for trending details such as bright colors, metallics and details on the actual wedge. The wedge comes in a variety of heights and can be sleek or chunky.

POINTED TOE PUMP

I am so happy to see the return of the pointed toe pump because I never got rid of mine! Always a classic they work perfectly well with a pair of jeans or a 50's style cocktail dress. Be bold and add a pop of color to your office look or keep it neutral. Coming in a range of heights from kitten heels to skyscrapers there is something for everyone!

BALLET FLAT

The ballet flat has been with us for some time and will obviously not be going anywhere because it is comfy to wear and cute! To get on trend look for pointed toe styles and t-bars that are easier to dress up than the usual round toe flat we're all used to. Perfect for the party season!

SANDAL / THONG

In Australia we call it a sandal or a thong, it is pretty much considered the national shoe! A staple in every summer wardrobe its wearability can take us from a stroll on the beach to an evening party. Look for on trend details such as bold colors, pastels, jewel tones and metallic details to keep your look up to date.

Emmys 2012 Red Carpet Trends - Burgundy

Burgundy has made its return from the style wilderness in recent times. Our first introduction to it was in the form of lipsticks coming through in deep shades of plum and wine. Much like red burgundy comes in a number of shades with different undertones.

Tina Fey was a standout in a Vivienne Westwood fitted gown. With it's purple undertones the dress was striking hugging her figure in all the right places. She kept her makeup neutral and jewelry minimal as the ebroidered detail across her bust was just enough "showiness". We love this sexy take on burgundy.

Jena Malone was another knockout in her deep wine colored J. Mendel gown with draping and sky high split. We love this look because it reminds us of a gladiator goddess. She kept that theme going with her metallic cuff heels. Overall the look is strong and effortless at the same time.

Mayiam Bailik wore a custom Pamella Rolland gown. We love the color, we love the gathered detail at the waist, we love the sheer long sleeves but paired with the fussy cowl neck we feel it is more suited to a woman 30 years her senior. Perhaps Dame Judy Dench? This dress cried out for a little bit of skin. Changing that neckline to a v would have changed this look completely and instead of nanna couture this look would have been Old Hollywood Glamour.

Funny woman Julia Louise Dreyfuss was a head turner in a custom Vera Wang. We love the tulle wrapping and peek a boo bustier. This dress is simple perfection.

So what have we learned about burgundy? It's not only a good color for wine and lipsticks. It does tend to draw the over 30's crowd but this color is rich and warm and can be modern if the details are kept simple and striking. A great alternative to red that can sometimes be too over the top or daring look to burgundy for something sexy and mysterious.

Emmys 2012 Red Carpet Trends - Gray

Gray has always been a favorite of ours for evening wear. It is a great alternative to black and does not seem to date. It comes in a range of shades but finding the right one for your coloring is very important.

Sarah Hyland designed her soft grey dress with Marchesa. The draping across the bust and gathered detail at the waist is reminiscent of a bygone era. Definitely not a look for everyone but we think this spritely young lady looked sweet.

Emily Vancamp has been one of televisions most watched fashionistas this year and we looked forward to seeing her red carpet style. As much as we love her gray J. Mendel gown with it's sheer panels and tulle we feel the look is somewhat lost on Emily.  We much prefer the original design with it's sheer skirt and slightly darker detailed bodice. Emilys makeup is also too neutral for this color and her skintone making everything a bit one dimensional and flat.

Morena Baccarin was the real winner in the gray stakes in her stunning Basil Soda evening gown. The color was perfect against her skintone and dark locks. She complimented her beautiful gown with gray eyeshadow and a plum lip.

Gray carries an understated glamour. Make sure to find your perfect shade of gray and add some color in your makeup for drama. A red lip is the perfect accessory to a gray gown!

Emmys 2012 Red Carpet Trend - Orange

One of our favorite trends for the evening was definitely orange! We saw citrus earlier this year at the Met Ball and it is another color that seems to be here to stay and why not when it demands attention the way it does?!

Lindsay Pulsipher looked like a goddess in a Bibhu Mohapatra draped gown. We love the simplicity and effotlessness of the overall look. Her peachy toned makeup paired with this gown gave her a beautiful natural glow. Very romantic!

Padma Lakshmi did not dissappoint in a Monique Lhullier resort 2013 fit and flare gown. One of our favorites for the evening Padma kept it simple with peachy/bronze makeup, soft waves and minimal accessories. Just dreamy!

Ginnifer Goodwin showed us how this color can be taken from one extreme to another. Not only does it work on beautifully tanned skin this alabaster maiden looked smashing in another Monique Lhullier resort 2013 gown. Her overall look was modern perfection with just that little bit of edge with her cropped hair and dark earrings.

Get your orange on ladies. It is bold, sexy and makes a statement!

Emmys 2012 Red Carpet Trends - Yellow

Yellow showed strong on the red carpet at the 2012 Emmy awards proving that this bright and fun color is not just for a sunny afternoon in the park. Earlier this year we saw the yellow trend at the Met Ball and this just goes to show this one is here to stay.

Julianne Moore strutted the red carpet in a Dior Couture skirt and topens ensemble that has the critics divided. We love this look on Julianne. She looks young and vibrant! With the strong lip and and relaxed locks Julianne looks modern and like she does not take herself too seriously. The color compliments her coloring perfectly.

Kaley Cuoco wore a lovely Angel Sanchez creation with an architectural peplum. We love the dress but we feel this dress would have been better suited to someone taller.

Claire Danes was a real surpise package in a strapless Lanvin gown with gathered waist detail. The dress was simple and effortless and who would have guessed she's hiding a baby bump under there? Definitely one of her strongest moments on the red carpet. We love that she's looking sunkissed and healthy!

Hannah Simone dropped by in an Emilio Pucci Couture one strap number. The color works great against her coloring unfortunately the fit is all wrong in the bust area.

When choosing this trend for yourself add a pop of color to your lips and keep it fun and interesting.

Breaking A Style Rut - It's All In The Details

I've always admired women who change their look and style regularly. It speaks to their personality, confident women who are willing to try new things. Although I'm no shrinking violet when it comes to fashion myself I do find it very easy to fall in a rut. That's because it's easy to go with what you know works.

Being in a style rut came to the forefront of my mind in this last week as I watched the Duchess of Cambridge step out time and time again in a look I feel like I've seen a million times before. Yes, she always looks polished and pretty and she is very obviously sticking with what works for her shape. That predictability however can make it seem like there is a lack of personality there. For me her style always seems girly and as a woman who is 30 years old I feel like she is not yet confident enough in herself to enjoy being a woman and really playing with fashion. Am I reading too much into her simple belted a-line dresses and sensible shoes?

Now there is nothing wrong with having a signature look. Princess Mary of Denmark is another royal with a signature hairstyle who knows how to keep us guessing with her fashion. Always appropriate, always fashionable she is every inch the modern woman and slightly underrated in the style stakes. She keeps her look up to date and makes it her own with great details and accessories!

But how do we break a rut?

I've had long hair for several years now and even though the urge for change arises every few months I can never quite bring myself to do anything drastic. The reality is breaking a rut does not need to be that frightening, it could be as simple as taking down your everyday ponytail, changing your lipstick and blush or being daring with your accessories. It's all in the details. Most of these changes are noticeable but not permanent so there is no need for fear.

Look at what's trending and incorporate elements of it into your everyday style. If the thought of a neon / pastel dress against your skin is frightening opt for trending colors in a purse, bangle or shoes. If you dread wearing heels opt for kitten heels that keep you low to the ground and are not too difficult to walk on but are effortlessly feminine. Alternatively opt for wedges that give you the support and height for that long, lean silhouette. Instead of your ponytail or bun in the office opt for a simple braid or add a hair accessory just to change things up. Now see, is it really that hard to break rut? ;)

What's the GoS - Katie Holmes First Face of Bobbi Brown Cosmetics

We were quite intrigued to hear the announcement that Katie Holmes would be the first ever celebrity face of  Bobbi Brown cosmetics.

Having launched the label in 1991 the line was snapped up by Estee Lauder a short four years later because it is just that good!. In our humble opinion Bobbi Brown was one of the leading labels that was accessible to the wider public that actually catered to the coloration of the wider public. One of the reasons it never really needed a celebrity face to bring it to the forefront.

In a statement about Katies new appointment Bobbi Brown said - “Katie Holmes epitomizes the modern ‘Bobbi woman’… I think of her as the modern day Ali McGraw, who I have always admired,” says Bobbi Brown, “Katie is a classic natural beauty, entrepreneur, and mother. When I met her, I thought she was a natural fit for my brand, and felt an instant connection with her because we have so much in common.”

We have to agree wholeheartedly with Bobbi. Katie is a natural beauty and comes across as a hardworking mum, something that resonates with modern women across the globe. Her recent step away from Tom Cruise has shown she is capable, assertive and strong, fitting in perfectly with their catch phrase "pretty powerful".

Visually Katie is effortlessly pretty and her minimalist make up allows that natural beauty to shine through. We think Katie is the perfect ambassador for a brand that focusses on individual beauty. We look forward to seeing how we can all recreate that effortless beauty.

Fashion Fail Friday - MTV Video Music Awards

It's been a while since we've put together a Fashion Fail Friday but thanks to the MTV Video Music Awards we didn't have to look very far.

One of the stand out trends of the night was over processed hair. There is only one lady who pulls this hair off for me and that is Gwen Stefani. One of the reasons it is an epic fail is that it's been done to death, it's boring, unoriginal and really does not look good on many people. So let this be a lesson.... Here's one trend that we probably shouldn't latch onto. People who have hairdressers and stylist in tow on a daily basis can't get it right!

To kick off the F.F.F we have Miley Cyrus. Poor thing always seems to feature in this section on our blog and it's nothing personal she just manages to get it so wrong when she gets it wrong. Let's face it, we need say nothing about that hair. The silliness speaks for itself. Paired with the very slinky black dress with witchy poo hemline it is all a bit bride of Frankenstein. Perhaps Miley is getting ready for Halloween early!

Dear, dear Ke$ha... I'm not sure why she was at these awards. I'm not even sure she is musically relevant but the lady showed us why she is not "fashionably" relevant. With hair the same color as her skin ... ashen ... all I get from this look ages her by about 30 years. I know it was the height of fashion to have gray hair for about a minute a while ago but even then the look makes no sense. Unless you are naturally gray why would you do this to yourself??? The outfit needs no commentary, baggy... saggy, unflattering and pidgeon toed. I know there's a pretty girl under there she just needs a real stylist to bring her out!

I have a soft spot for Amber Rose. I know she is a striking woman and she is one of the few women who should wear short hair but I'm a little tired of this super white hair. I think it's time for a change!

Finally, Pink. Little Miss Astro Boy herself. Pink was one of the forerunners with the shaved sides and super blonde pompadour. It's all part of the fun but it's a look that's hard to wear prettily or elegantly and it's all a bit .. "dime a dozen" these days... *yawn*

Trend Spotting - Celebrity Style Embroidery

We are so delighted to see some of our favorite fashion trends going strong and being worn beautifully on the red carpet. Look for features such as lace, sheer fabric, embroidery, over the knee styles and sleeves to get in on what's trending.

Zoe Saldana is always a favorite with her infectious smile and she did not let us down with her latest outing for the premier of "The Words". The lovely actress wore one of our favorite designers - Elie Saab. Her gold embroidered lace dress from the Fall 2012 couture collection was perfectly ladylike with it's over the knee length and three quarter sleeves. There is a hint of sexiness in the silhouette cut close to her frame and the sheer aspects of the dress. Beautifully done Zoe!

Selena Gomez continued the trend in a Dolce & Gabbana Fall 2012 dress featuring sheer fabric, embroidery and lace. We love the overall styling and would love to add this dress to our wardrobe. Even though we are amongst the biggest fans of ladylike dressing we do feel this is a tad too mature for someone as young as Selena...perhaps it's just the color?  Considering this was a photocall for her new movie "Spring Breakers" something a little more playful with all the same details would have been more suitable. Other than that the look is flawless.

Vanessa Hudgens was cute as a button and ever so ladylike when she hit the red carpet with Selena Gomez for "Spring Breakers" in this darling black and white 50's style dress from Blumarine. We love the black embroidered leaf overlay and the sheer boat neck detail. This is one of those perfect dresses that can be worn by women in a range of ages and is flattering to a number of shapes.

YSL Set For Name Change

Iconic fashion house Yves Saint Laurent is set to undergo a change of name after fifty years under the supervision of new creative director Hedi Slimane. In future, Yves Saint Laurent will be known as Saint Laurent Paris (inspiring thoughts of a Catholic Saint??). The name change is expected to be unveiled in the coming months, for Hedi’s 2013 spring collection. The YSL logo will remain unchanged.
Slimane says he joined the YSL at the beginning of this year and assumed “total creative responsibility for the brand image and all its collections”, including store concepts.

We are keen to see what the name change will bring for this much loved brand. Generally speaking when brands change name they also change direction so we wait with bated breath to find out exactly what Saint Laurent of Paris is all about. Personally we will always love Yves Saint Laurent as it rolls of the tongue and inspires images of romance and luxury in the city of Paris.....

What do you think of the new name??

Steal Her Style - Emmy Rossum Black & White Lace Dress

Continuing the lace theme Emmy Rossum stepped out recently in a knee length black and white contrast lace dress by Zuhair Murad. Emmy is effortlessy chic. Not only is the dress stunning with it's two tone detail and waist cinching, we love Emmys styling. Her side swept waves and bold lip give her an air of old school sophistication. She's kept her accessories simple with a black clutch and patent leather peep toes and minimal jewelry.

We may not all be able to afford a Zuhair Murad of our own but we can certainly look out for the details to recreate a similar look. For our "steal her style" selections today we've chosen to use all Australian retailers and all items come in under $100. The online boutique Esther  has this lovely little number at a ridiculous $39.00. Limited sizes only.

Liaison long sleeve lace dress with black insert.

Here is another black and white lace themed cocktail dress Immortal

Wittner, has these patent leather ankle strap pumps om special at $79.95

And don't forget that black clutch ladies. Zu has this black satin evening clutch for a tiny $70.
